About
TaxiFares.co.nz aims to inform the public of the varying taxi fares they can expect in New Zealand's main cities. Auckland in particular has some of the highest taxi fares in the world, however not all fares are equal. Selecting the right taxi company can significantly reduce the cost of your journey!

Methodology
TaxiFares.co.nz utilizes a routing and geocoding API developed by Geoff Leyland of Incremental Ltd to find routes and search for addresses. Geoff is an analytics consultant who specialises in routing and optimisation.
Once the shortest route between the two selected locations has been established, a simple algorithm applies each of the different companies' fare structures to the journey, resulting in a list of estimated fares. A journey's fare is calcuated using its distance in km, the time spent 'stationary' (where any speed below ~5km/hour is considered stationary) and includes a flag fall charge. Additional fees such as an eftpos charge can be included as well.
The fare tariff data used in this application was kindly sourced by The New Zealand Taxi Federation and provided by the New Zealand Transport Agency. It was last updated in January 2015.
There were a few key assumptions used in the development of this tool:
IMPORTANT: The fares calculated in this app are not intended to be a quote and the actual fare you are charged by the taxi company may differ significantly. As a result, this tool is NOT intended to allow you to contest fares with the taxi company. While the results are calculated using real tariff data, they are not guaranteed to be 100% accurate (although they should generally be close) - they are meant only to gauge the relative difference in fare between companies. Also keep in mind that some taxi companies may have higher fares because they have a higher vehicle quality, better driver training programme or higher quality communication equipment. The fare estimate this application gives you is not an indicator of value for money, only of the likely fare relative to other taxi companies

There were a few key assumptions used in the development of this tool:
- The customer wants to minimise the time they spend in the taxi and the taxi driver knows (and takes) the resulting shortest route
- A journey taken during the 'day' takes place at 12:00pm and a journey taken at 'night' takes place at 12:00am. These times define the tariff used by each company
- The journey is undertaken by one passenger and as such multiple person tariffs are not considered
